How To Know if You Need Physical Therapy
You may need physical therapy if you’re receiving post-acute care, recently had a joint replacement, or are recovering from a post-traumatic injury.
Post-Acute Care
Acute care provides short-term medical treatment to older patients. Reasons an individual may need acute care include the following:
- Illness: Older adults face distinct health challenges because their immune system is less effective. Consequently, it’s harder for older adults to prevent illness or to fight viruses when they get sick. Older adults make up the majority of annual deaths from the flu and are more likely to die from COVID-19. It is estimated that each year, respiratory syncytial virus (RSC) causes up to 180,000 older adults to require hospitalization.
- Medical condition: It is more common for older adults to have chronic medical conditions, including the following:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Dementia
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Osteoarthritis
Vision loss and hearing loss are also common among older adults. Any of these conditions could require acute care. For example, diabetes can affect a person’s cognitive functions, or trigger secondary conditions, such as hypertension or heart disease, which could cause health issues requiring hospitalization.
- Surgery: Older adults may have surgery to treat age-related health issues, including cataract surgery, hip or knee replacement, or a coronary artery bypass.
- Traumatic injury: Older adults are more susceptible to injuries because many experience bone and muscle loss as they age. Since older people have more difficulty balancing, they’re more likely to fall. Each year in the U.S., up to 4 million older adults receive medical care during a visit to an emergency department or hospitalization.
Older adults may be weak after a period of bed rest while receiving acute care. They may need physical therapy during post-acute care to regain leg strength, relearn how to perform gross motor functions, and improve their balance. Physical therapy also helps with pain management, which can improve a patient’s quality of life, and help with their recovery after hospitalization.

Joint Replacement
Joint replacement surgery can compensate for damage from arthritis, and help older adults improve their mobility and balance. Common joint replacement surgeries older adults have include hip replacement surgery and knee replacement surgery.
Individuals benefit from physical therapy after joint replacement surgery to improve their gross motor functions and reduce pain.
Post-Traumatic Injury
Injuries from falls are more common among older adults, but that isn’t the only type of injury they may experience. Cognitive decline from diabetes or dementia may contribute to accidents, such as burns or cuts in the kitchen. Older adults may also require hospitalization for injuries caused by car accidents.
Depending on the nature of the traumatic injury, older adults may benefit from physical therapy during their rehabilitation to help manage pain and regain gross motor functions, or learn to use assistive devices.
